Binghamton Softball gets 6-4 win on Senior Day thanks to the freshmen
5/3/2014 (Updated 10:57:04 PM)VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman outfielders Gabby Bracchi drove in three runs and fellow freshman outfielder Bridget Hunt homered, leading Binghamton (21-23, 10-7 AE) to a 6-4 win over Stony Brook (32-16, 15-2 AE) in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats avoided being swept by the first-place Seawolves in the weekend series and send out their six seniors with a triumph in their final home game.
Bracchi, who finished the three-game series with a team-best .625 batting average (5-for-8), drove in all of her runs in the first two innings. She doubled home sophomore outfielder Sydney Harbaugh in the bottom of the first inning and had a two-run double the following inning to put the Bearcats up 3-0.
One batter after Bracchi’s second hit, senior outfielder Colleen Dougherty scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
The Seawolves tied the game with a four-run, top of the fourth inning. Jessica Combs provided the big blow with a two-run home run over the left field fence. It marked her second home run in the weekend series.
Harbaugh, who is now hitting a team-best .375 for the season, scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning to put the Bearcats back up 5-4. One inning later, Hunt led off with her sixth home run of the season.
Freshman pitcher Annika Weisinger came on in relief following Combs’ home run and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to raise her record to 7-12.
Fellow freshman pitcher Shelby Donhauser retired the final three batters to record her first collegiate save.
The loss was tagged to Jane Sallen, who is now 11-9.
Harbaugh and Hunt each finished the game 2-for-3.
Binghamton will begin play in the upcoming America East Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 2 Albany in the opening round on Thursday. Game times have yet to be released.
