Local Fire Departments Recruit New Members

Fire departments across the state held open recruitments today for those interested in joining the force.

Visitors were able to enter the trucks, and learn about the inner workings of fighting fires, as well as off duty work and how to respond to emergency calls. FOX 40 was at the  Vestal  fire department today to check out the action. Fire fighters there say all are welcome to join, regardless of age or physical ability.

"There's a lot of jobs people can do that don't actually include the actual fire fighting aspect of it. They can help out directing traffic, they can be pump operators, drivers for our pumpers and stuff like that," said Chuck Paffie, Lieutenant, Vestal Fire Department.

And in the spirit of fire safety, the department advises everyone that the New York State burn ban is still in effect until May 16th.
