Owego Welcomes Construction of New Elementary School

Steel beams may not be pretty but they are a welcome sight in Owego.

Since monday construction workers have been putting up the beams to build the shell of one section of the district's new elementary school. This section of the planned 120,000 square-foot building will house the auditorium, gymnasium, and mechanical rooms. The old school was 63,000 square feet but didn't have an auditorium or the spaces for special education support services that the new building will have.

"This community has been wanting to see this for about two-and-a-half years now and it's finally something visible, really something tangible that you can get a feel for now that you couldn't before when you were apparently looking at piles of dirt," said Dr. Bill Russell, Superintendent of the Owego Apalachin School District.

The new building is expected to open in September of 2015.
