Binghamton Men's Lacrosse beats Vermont 9-6

Burlington, VT—The Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team improved to 3-0 in league play with a 9-6 road victory over Vermont on Saturday afternoon from Virtue Field. The Bearcats (5-6, 3-0 AE) improved to 4-1 away from home this season in large part to the play of freshman faceoff specialist Dan Mazurek who won a career-high 17-of-18 faceoffs for the visitors. Six different players tallied goals for Binghamton, including Matt Springer’s sixth hat trick of the season.

Mazurek won the game’s first 12 faceoffs of the afternoon and added an assist in the three-goal victory. His faceoff win percentage (.944) is a single game school record and his 14 ground balls also sets a new program bench mark for Binghamton.

“I thought our guys gave a great defensive effort out there today,” head coach Scott Nelson said.  “We stepped up to the physical play and really didn’t give them too many quality looks. Dan (Mazurek) obviously was terrific for us and really allowed us to grab control there in the fourth quarter. You have to give credit to Vermont’s defense who also did a heck of a job today.

It probably wasn’t the prettiest of games at times but I think we matched their toughness and intensity and came away with a good road win.”

Binghamton had the afternoon’s first goal that was the result of an opportunistic turnover in Vermont’s own half. Matt Springer was the recipient off that costly turnover, putting away his 29th goal of the season off the feed from fellow senior Kelly Donigan.

After a Vermont goal, the Bearcats answered on a well executed offensive set to go ahead one. Donigan used a screen from Springer that allowed him to launch a long shot that beat UVM goalkeeper Justin Rosenberg.

With the score at 2-2 in the second, Tucker Nelson fed a cutting Springer who deposited his 30th goal of the year on a quick trigger shot. Just a short while later, senior midfielder Michael Antinozzi bolstered the visitors lead with a pair of spin moves that resulted in him beating Rosenberg.

BU closed out the half riding a lot of momentum into intermission. Thanks to timely defense and the play of Mazurek, Binghamton was able to string a 2-0 run heading into break. Sophomore Mitchell Rick and Springer both scored goals to propel Binghamton to a 6-3 advantage at half.

Coming out of halftime, Vermont bounced back with a stingy defensive effort in the third. The Catamounts held BU scoreless in the quarter and received goals from Ian McKay and a man-up score from James Barlow that cut Binghamton’s lead to just one at 6-5. With time winding down in the quarter, senior goalie Max Schefler made a huge save with one second left on the clock, giving Binghamton a one-goal lead with 15 minutes to go.

Binghamton used that save as momentum in the fourth when junior Paul O’Donnell looped around the right side of the cage and fired a lefty shot that beat Rosenberg over his shoulder for his 15th goal of the season. O’Donnell’s goal snapped nearly a 17-minute scoreless stretch.

A short while later, Binghamton increased their lead to 8-5 on Tyler Deluca’s fourth goal of the season as he beat his man one-on-one and calmly finished in front of cage. On the ensuing faceoff, Mazurek won his 15th faceoff of the day and quickly found an open O’Donnell who slung a shot from 12 yards out that beat Rosenberg far post. O’Donnell’s goal came just six seconds after Deluca’s, tying a program record for the quickest two-goal span in school history.
Vermont tacked on a man-up goal late as Binghamton was able to hold on for the 9-6 road victory. BU improved their record to 8-5 all-time versus the Catamounts with the victory.
As a team, Binghamton won the ground ball battle by a final count of 34-24 and held Vermont to just six goals on 36 shots. Schefler made eight saves in net and both Chris Bechle and Greg Cove each caused a pair of turnovers.

Binghamton’s 3-0 start in America East competition is the best start since 2004 when they would up going 6-0 en route to a regular season conference crown. Binghamton will clinch a berth into the America East tournament for the first time since 2011 with a Hartford loss. The Hawks play UMBC at 3:30 this afternoon in Baltimore.

Binghamton has little rest between their next game as they get set to host Canisius on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Golden Griffins and 6-5 this season and are 1-2 all-time versus the Bearcats.
