Binghamton Softball have won 3 in a row, beat UMBC 6-2

VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman third baseman Crysti Eichner went 3-for-3 and drove in a career-high three runs, powering Binghamton (10-10, 1-0 AE) to a 6-2 win over UMBC (22-12, 0-3 AE) in an America East softball game on Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The victory was the third straight for the Bearcats.

Eichner’s biggest hit came in the bottom of the third inning, with the score tied at 2-2. She delivered a two-out, two run single to cap a four-run inning. Earlier in the inning, freshman outfielder Gabby Bracchi and sophomore first baseman Lisa Cadogan each singled home a run.

Two innings later, Eichner struck again, singling home the Bearcats’ fifth run of the game. She scored one batter later on a RBI single by freshman outfielder Bridget Hunt.

The Retrievers had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by Bridget O’Malley. Senior pitcher Demi Laney, however, held UMBC scoreless over the final four innings to raise her record to 9-4. In the process, she struck out nine batters and issued only one walk.

Jessica Holte, meanwhile, fell to 13-5 with the loss. Three of the runs she allowed were unearned.

Bracchi finished the game 2-for-4 scored a pair of runs.
“I thought we had some very good at bats today,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “We battled hard at the plate and got some key (two-out) hits. Demi also did a nice job for us.”

Senior second baseman Jessica Bump stole second base in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving her 45 thefts for her career. In the process, she became the program’s all-time stolen base leader. Bump had previously been tied with Christine Pinter (44 steals from 1989-91).

The Bearcats, who came into the game ranked third in the nation with 2.47 steals per game, stole six bases against the Retrievers.
Binghamton and UMBC conclude their series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
