Mixed Picture on Jobs Front

The employment picture in Binghamton continues to be mixed at best.

On Thursday, the state released new numbers for February and Binghamton showed a loss.

Binghamton lost 600 jobs from February of 2013 to February of 2014. Of those 600 job losses 500 were in the private sector.

Some good news is that the losses have shrunk compared to other months.

But gains in some sectors such as leisure and hospitality have been offset by losses in others. 

"So we have a smattering of growth but manufacturing is a narrowing of a loss but a loss nonetheless. Government is a narrowing of a loss but a loss nonetheless. Financial activity is showing some losses as well. So it's a mixed bag," said Department of Labor Analyst Christian Harris.

Harris says there is a potential boost in jobs later in the year. He points to the possibility one of three area casino proposals could be approved as well as a couple of potential Lockheed Martin contracts, including one of the presidential helicopter.
