Two Pets Die in Fire That Destroys Home

As a former firefighter Daryl Seward has seen his share of house fires. But today he watched flames tear through his own  property at 796 Castle Creek Road where his family lives. He says they lost everything--including the tools he needs to make a living.

"Everything I have for work is in that cellar. They lost a lot, we lost a lot," said Daryl Seward, homeowner.
 
That's including a dog and a cat that were trapped inside the home.

The call came in just before 11 this morning. Heavy smoke billowed from the home as the Chenango Fire Department began to  attack the flames.
 
"Pulled up, and as we pulled up, there were flames coming from the front of the house," said Russell Carey, Assistant Chief, Chenango Fire Department.
 
When fire officials arrived on the scene, explosions were coming from the front of the house. They believe this is due to oxygen tanks within the home. But the cause is still under investigation.
 
"We weren't even gone an hour. Everything was fine when we left," said Seward.

"At that point we just said, not knowing what was in the house, we were going to pull back and be defensive about it," said Carey.
 
While fire crews did their best,  the home which was fully engulfed when they arrived--was a total loss.

"Property can be replaced. Firefighter lives, we're not going to take that risk and put them inside. It's just not worth it," said Carey.
 
Seward says he doesn't know how the fire started, but is thankful no one was home at the time.
 
"At least nobody got hurt. That's the main thing," said Seward.
