Bearcats battle back-and-forth but come up empty

Vestal, N.Y.Binghamton (2-4, 0-0 AE) gave #19 Colgate all they could handle, coming up just short in a 10-9 home loss from the Bearcats Sports Complex on an overcast Saturday afternoon in Vestal. Matt Springer scored a game-high five goals and sophomore JT Hauck tallied another five points for the Bearcats on Saturday.

Justin Kirchners goal with just over three minutes remaining ends up being the difference, but it was a defensive stand that sealed it for the visitors. Trailing 10-8, Springer muscled in his fifth goal of the season to bring the Bearcats to within one at 10-9. Following a win on the faceoff for Binghamton, the hosts were unable to score the equalizer as the countrys second-ranked Colgate defense held strong to secure the road win.

Springer paced the way for Binghamton with his 16th career hat trick on Saturday. The Hamburg, NY native scored five goals and now has a team-leading 18 on the season. Hauck had his best game of the 2014 season, scoring two goals as well as a team-high three assists. Tucker Nelson added a goal and two assists, and freshman Tyler Deluca registered his first career goal in the loss.

In net, goalie Max Schefler made life difficult for the Colgate offense. He made a season-high 13 stops in goal and also scooped up four ground balls. The Bearcats were physical on defense, causing 10 Colgate turnovers. Senior LSM Garrett Augustyn caused a team-high three turnovers and senior Shawn Needham added two.

In the first half, Binghamton got on the board first just under two minutes into the contest courtesy of a lefty strike from Hauck. The junior midfielder spun off the dodge and slung a shot that beat Colgate freshman goalkeeper Brandon Burke for the games first goal.
It was seven minutes before the Raiders responded on one of two goals on the afternoon for Eric Foote, who tied things up at one goal apiece. From there, the 19th ranked team in the country scored three more goals unanswered, including two from leading scorer Ryan Walsh.

Trailing 4-1, second quarter goals from Springer and Hauck pulled the Bearcats to within one, 4-3, midway through the stanza. Colgate tacked on a goal and received outstanding goalkeeping from first-year keeper Brandon Burke who made nine saves in the first 30 minutes.

The Bearcats had one of their best quarters of the season in the third, outscoring Colgate 4-1. Springer recorded a hat trick himself in the quarter and freshman Tyler Deluca also scored his first collegiate goal with an acrobatic score that evened the score up at six. With 2:41 left, Springer buried his fourth goal of the game on the give from Hauck that resulted in a 7-6 lead heading to the fourth.

Walsh knotted things up at seven all with his third goal of the afternoon, but Binghamton quickly responded just 48 seconds later on the timely finish by Nelson. He received a skillful feed from Hauck and tip toed just outside the crease and quickly deposited his seventh goal of the season, putting the hosts up 8-7.

The Raiders, however, reeled off a 3-1 run down the stretch and came up with the clinching defensive stand in the final seconds that propelled them to the 10-9 triumph. Binghamton is now 2-10 all-time versus the Patriot League school.

Binghamton closes out their three-game homestand next Sunday (Mar. 23) when they welcome in the Air Force for a 3 p.m. game at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Falcons will enter Vestal with a record of 4-3, most recently defeating Jacksonville on Saturday 15-12. The non-conference game will be the first meeting between both programs.
