Police Training: Tasers and Takedowns
3/5/2014 (Updated 9:51:21 PM)Tasers, takedowns, and training. That was on the agenda Wednesday for local police officers as part of the Broome County Sheriff's in-service training session.
The training includes a number of scenarios and drills, focused this year on active homicide response, stress inoculation, and inter-agency cooperation.
According to the sheriff's office this training exceeds the annual requirements set forth by the state.
"It adds a realism versus doing it in a classroom, that they're in frequently. By putting them in a different building, a different room we're concentrating on the situation, the scenario. They don't know where the furniture is, where the door is, what the room looks like, very much like what they're going to encounter on the street," said Academy Director Sgt. Benjamin Harting.
The Endicott Police, SUNY Binghamton Police, and SUNY Broome Campus Safety all took part along with members of the sheriff's office Wednesday.
