Beck earns third AEast Rookie of the Week

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton freshman point guard Marlon Beck II has been selected as the America East Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Its the third time this season that Beck has earned the weekly honor.

Beck played a crucial role in BUs riveting 72-71 overtime win at New Hampshire last Wednesday. He forced overtime with three clutch free throws with 4.6 seconds left in regulation. Down 62-59 with 24 seconds left, BU misfired on a three bid but got the rebound and Beck was fouled attempting a three from the top of the key. He swished the first attempt and then after a Wildcats timeout, sank two more. Beck was shooting 57 percent from the line entering the game.

In overtime, Beck continued his hot hand by drilling a three-pointer from the left corner with 56 seconds left  a shot that gave BU a 69-68 lead. He then made two more free throws with 31 seconds left to give the Bearcats a 71-68 lead.

He wound up with a team-high 17 points, 15 of which came after halftime.

Beck ranks second in the America East in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5) and seventh in assists (3.1/game). He has reached double figures in scoring 10 times and is averaging 9.2 points with a team-high 37 three-pointers.

As a team, Binghamton has claimed Rookie of the Week honors six times this season with Yosef Yacob (Jan. 13), Magnus Richards (Nov. 25) and Nick Madray (Nov. 11) joining Beck (Dec. 9, Dec. 30, Feb. 17).

The Bearcats host Albany on Wednesday in an ESPN3 game. Tip is 7 p.m. at the Events Center.
