Reed, Brown, Yacob lead Bearcats to streak busting win

VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore guard Jordan Reed delivered game-highs of 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead Binghamton mens basketball (5-19, 2-9 America East) to a 73-58 win over visiting Maine (5-18, 3-8 AE) Saturday afternoon from the Events Center. Reed hit the 20-point and 15-rebound mark for the second straight game and the Bearcats held the leagues highest scoring offense 15 points under its season average (73.3 ppg.).

It was a strong performance today, head coach Tommy Dempsey said. We played for 40 minutes, guarded hard and rebounded very well. When youre plus-15 on the glass, you rarely lose. We got out in transition and the game opened up for us a little. Even during our losing streak, weve had great practices that were intense and emotional. I thought we played well against Stony Brook on Tuesday and its good to put together back-to-back solid games. We want to stamp every performance and live with the result. Its great to see the guys rewarded today.

Reed was determined at both ends of the floor, racking up big stat numbers. He hit 6-of-11 from the field, 8-of-11 from the line and also totaled four steals and two blocks in 38 minutes.

Jordan is playing at another level these last few games, Dempsey said. When hes at that level, it gives his young teammates confidence ... its inspiring. The team follows his lead.

Senior center Roland Brown scored a career-high 17 points (8-of-14 FG) and just missed a double-double with a season-high nine rebounds. Freshman guard Yosef Yacob added 15 points and classmate Marlon Beck II delivered seven points, punctuated by a key three-pointer with 4:22 left that put the game away. Beck also contributed four assists with no turnovers in 23 minutes.

Up 33-32 at intermission, Binghamton opened the second half with an 11-2 run that included four points apiece from Reed and Brown. Yacob nailed a three-pointer to give the Bearcats a 44-34 lead with 14:19 left. The Black Bears whittled the lead down to three, 46-43, before BU went on a 14-3 run (in 4:52) that featured six points from Yacob and Reeds second alley-oop dunk of the game. Maine cut its margin to nine with two straight buckets before Beck hit a shot-clock, buzzer-beating three with 4:22 left to restore the double-digit cushion.

Binghamton put 40 points on the board in the second half and for the game, held a 48-33 advantage on the glass.

Brown had 10 of his points in the second half and he earned a career-high 31 minutes on the floor. Yacob (3-for-6 3pt. FG) reached twin figures for the eighth time in the last nine games. Sophomore guard Karon Waller added eight first-half points.
Binghamton next plays at New Hampshire on Wednesday.

NOTES
Reed and Xavier Pollard (12 pts.) were named the America East Players of the Game ... Reed broke the school record for career free throws made (Div. I era) and now has 255, surpassing Sebastian Hermenier (254 between 2001-06) ... Beck now has 76 assists, the most of any BU freshman during its Division I tenure (Troy Hailey had 73 in 2003-04).
