Albrecht's hot hand not enough for Bearcats

STONY BROOK, N.Y.  Kori Bayne-Walker scored a game-high 18 points and Sabre Proctor added 14 points and eight rebounds, leading Stony Brook (16-7, 7-3 AE) to a 62-42 win over Binghamton (4-19, 1-9 AE) in an America East womens basketball game on Wednesday night at Pritchard Gym. The game marked the second of three straight road contests for the Bearcats.

It was an 18-1 run over a span of 10:44 in the second half that was the difference in the game.  The Bearcats had played Stony Brook even through the first 25 minutes of regulation but were undone by shooting problems thereafter.

We had a tough time scoring in the second half, head coach Nicole Scholl said.  We were really struggling to make shots and that put a lot of pressure on our defense.

The loss overshadowed a career night by sophomore guard Kim Albrecht, who finished with a team-high 16 points. She drained four three-point field goals in the process.

For the second game in a row, the Bearcats put together a solid first 20 minutes and the score was tied 26-26 at the break.  They closed the first half on an 8-2 run, which was capped off by a buzzer-beating shot by junior forward Sherae Swinson.

It was Albrechts field goal with 15:09 left that tied the game at 32-32. The Bearcats next field goal, however, would not come until sophomore forward Morgan Murphy made a layup at the 4:25 mark. By that time, the score was 50-35 Stony Brook.

On the other end of the floor, Bayne Walker was the catalyst. She had seven of her points during the decisive 10-minute stretch of the game. Proctor, meanwhile, added three points during that run.
The Bearcats also struggled at the free throw line, making just five of their 14 attempts. They missed six foul shots alone in the first half.

Swinson and senior guard Vaneeshia Paulk each finished with nine points. Sophomore guard Kandace Newry dished out a career-high six assists.

Up next for Binghamton is a Sunday game at Maine, starting at 2 p.m.

NOTES: Albrecht netted 14 points in Binghamtons last game at Stony Brook on Jan. 9, 2013. She drained a pair of three-point field goals in the process. Her previous career high of 15 points came at New Mexico on Nov. 29.
