Yacob continues to shine, but Bearcats fall

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Host Vermont (12-9, 6-1 America East) opened up a 25-point halftime lead and pinned a 72-39 loss on visiting Binghamton basketball (4-16, 1-6 AE) Sunday night at Patrick Gym.

The Catamounts gave up the first bucket of the game but quickly used a 15-0 run to establish control. The Bearcats offense was held without a point for nearly 10 minutes in the first half as poor shooting, nine turnovers and six Vermont blocks spelled doom. Vermont took a 38-13 lead into intermission and then shot 69 percent in the second half to keep the pedal to the metal.

Freshman guard Yosef Yacob was BUs lone player in double figures with 10 points. It was the fifth consecutive game that Yacob scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Karon Waller hit 3-of-3, including a pair of three-pointers, en route to eight points.

They just beat us up from start to finish, head coach Tommy Dempsey said. They were more physical ... just tougher than us. We had trouble getting the ball inside and they just pushed us around. Were going to have to take this as a learning experience and they better not push us around the next time. It was discouraging but youre going to have those nights once in a while. The key for me now is our response on Wednesday (vs. UMBC) and in practice tomorrow.

The Bearcats bumped up their efficiency in the second half, shooting 41 percent and losing only eight points to the margin over the final 20 minutes.

Ethan ODay led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-8 shooting.

Binghamton hosts the Retrievers on Wednesday and the home game will serve as the celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the opening of the Events Center.
