Maine-Endwell No Longer Fiscally Stressed

A local superintendent says his district is no longer as fiscally stressed as a current report suggests.

As we've reported 87 New York school districts were named fiscally stressed by the state's comptroller.

Maine-Endwell was one of those schools ranked as moderately fiscally stressed due to it's fund balance and budget deficit, which the school had been operating on for the last three years.

Superintendent Jason Van Fossen says that the comptroller's rating  is based off of district finances from previous years and that their 2013-2014 budget will address many of these problems.

"We had to make tough decisions but for the future of the district and for the financial health of the district they were necessary so although we made tough decisions, it's never easy to lay people off, it's never easy to take programs out of children's hands, we didn't have a choice," said  Jason VanFossen, Superintendent for Maine-Endwell School District.

Van Fossen says that if the problems had not been addressed there could have been the possibility of facing a state bail out, continuing defamation of programs, and even a possible merger.
