Maddux, Glavine, Thomas elected to Hall; Biggo, Piazza miss

After a 2013 class that saw no players receive the 75% required for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, 2014's induction, in terms of star power, more than makes up for the previous year.

Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and Frank Thomas all received more than the 75% of the vote require for induction.  Maddux earned 97.2%, Tom Glavine 91.9%, Thomas 83.7%.

In 23 years with the Cubs and Braves, mostly, and the Padresand  Dodgers in later years, Maddux amassed 355 wins against 227 losses, a 3.16 ERA, and 3,371 strikeouts, four straight Cy Young Awards from '92-'95, and 18 Gold Glove Awards ('90-'02, '04-'08).

Glavine spent 17 years with the Braves providing a dangerous 1-2 punch with Maddux.  In 2003 he came to the Big Apple and joined the New York Mets.  In his career he posted a 305-203 record, earning his 300th win with the Mets.  He also retired with a 3.54 ERA and 2,607 strikeouts and earned 2 Cy Young Awards.

Thomas, known as The Big Hurt played 16 of his 19 years with the Chicago White Sox.  Splitting time between first base and DH, Thomas blasted 521 career home runs, 1,704 RBI, and a career .301 batting average, .555 slugging percentage, and .419 OBP.

Just missing the cut this year was last year's ballot leader Craig Biggio who gained 74.8% of the vote.  Just two votes shy of induction.  Biggio played all 20 seasons with the Houston Astros recording 3,060 hits, .281 Avg., 414 SB, and 668 doubles.

Gaining ground compared to last year's 57.8% vote, but still falling short this year at 62.2% was 12-time All Star Mike Piazza.  Piazza broke into the league earning Rookie of the Year honors with the Dodgers in 1993, was traded to the Marlins in 1998 then five days later traded to the New York Mets.  Piazza led the Mets to the NLCS in 1999 and the World Series in 2000.  In 16 years he hit 427 HR (396 as a catcher - MLB record), 1,335 RBI, and a .308 Avg.  Piazza was elected to the New York Mets Hall of Fame in September of 2013.
