Marathons involve physical prowess --Mathalons involve the mind-- and math skills.
And local middle school students showed they were in great shape Saturday to tackle some tough mathematical opponents--at the Vestal Middle School.
Ten teams of five students each competed in seven timed rounds--to solve math problems that would daunt many grown-ups.
"Every student here is a winner. They've worked extremely hard and coaches work with them. we all are proud of these kids and they've done just a bang-up job here today," said Merry Jones, assistant principal at Vestal Middle School.
Prizes were awarded to the top three teams.
The Mathalon was sponsored by BAE Systems and the Broome County Coalition for Better Schools.
