U-E Grad Johnson traded to Oakland

In a trade that happened just after midnight Tuesday morning, the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to trade closer Jim Johnson to the Oakland Athletics for INF Jemile Weeks and a player to be named later.

Johnson, a 2001 Union-Endicott graduate, was drafted by the Orioles during the Tigers State Title run in '01.  In eight seasons in the majors, Johnson has earned 122 saves, including back-to-back seasons of 50 or more (51 in 2012, league-leading 50 in 2013.), and a career 3.11 ERA.

On a more interesting note, the Orioles wear black and orange, the same colors as Johnson's alma mater.  But he will be trading the familiar colors for Oakland's green and gold, ironically the same colors as his high school rival Vestal Golden Bears.

In other baseball news, the Yankees have signed Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury to a 7-year, $153 million contract with an option for an eighth year.
