Kicking the Habit
11/21/2013 (Updated 7:03:55 PM)If you're looking to kick the habit, Thursday was the day to give it a start.
It was the 38th annual Great American Smokeout. At UHS locations in the area there was plenty of information and encouragement to help people give up smoking. There was information on a local cessation group and the NY Quits hotline, elements that could be key in helping people quit.
"If someone tries to quit cold turkey it's only a seven-percent success rate. But if they have medication and counselling combined it's about a 30-percent success rate. And many smokers try five to six times to quit before they're successful," said UHS Tobacco Nurse Specialist Cathy Stevens.
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and death killing more than 25,000 New Yorkers every year.
