BU Softball releases 2014 schedule

VESTAL, N.Y.  The Binghamton softball team has released its 2014 schedule, which includes a season-opening trip to the South Florida Tournament Feb. 14-16. The 50-game slate also includes three in-season tournaments and 10 home dates at the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility.

The Bearcats schedule includes a pair of opponents that were nationally-ranked in 2013. They face both teams on the first day of the South Florida Tournament (Feb. 14). The host Bulls finished No. 26 in the final NFCA Poll while Tennessee was ranked second overall.

Binghamton faces two other teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last year. On April 13, it travels to Fordham. Defending America East champion Stony Brook visits the Bearcats Sports Complex for a three-game conference series May 3-4.

Following the South Florida Tournament, Binghamton heads to the UNLV Eller Media Stadium Classic (Feb. 28-March 2), the George Washington Tournament (March 8-9) and the George Mason Tournament (March 14-16).

On April 1, Binghamton opens up its home schedule against St. Bonaventure. Other non-conference home games come against Niagara (April 17), Colgate (April 23) and Cornell (April 29). In addition to Fordham, other non-conference road games are at Syracuse (April 9) and St. Johns (April 15).

America East action starts with a three-game series at conference newcomer UMass Lowell March 22-23. The following weekend, Binghamton heads to defending regular-season champion Albany (March 29-30).

The Bearcats other conference road series is at Maine April 26-27. Besides the Seawolves, Binghamton also has home conference series games against UMBC (April 5-6) and Hartford (April 19-20).

The weather has been great this fall so weve had a lot of time on the field with the team, head coach Michelle Burrell said. I think we were able to get a lot accomplished and have a good idea of what we want to focus on during the rest of fall and winter to help us prepare for the season and reach our team goals. We open up with some great competition at the South Florida and UNLV tournaments and are looking forward to the season.

The America East Tournament takes place May 8-11 at site yet to be determined. Last year, Binghamton was the No. 2 seed but ended up hosting the event when top-seeded Albany deferred.
Binghamton finished the 2013 season 30-17 (14-4 AE).
