BU Women's Soccer season comes to an end
10/31/2013 (Updated 6:27:17 PM)ORONO, MaineThird-seeded and host Maine (9-5-4) scored twice in the games opening 13 minutes and brought Binghamtons season to a close with a 2-0 win in the America East womens soccer quarterfinals, played Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field. Playing postseason for the eighth time in the last 10 years, the sixth-seeded Bearcats (8-8-2) elevated their game in the second half but couldnt dig out of the early hole.
Maine scored just five minutes into the contest when Eve LAbbes long shot from 35 yards out found the top netting. The Black Bears doubled their lead less than eight minutes later when Jordan Pellerin headed in a bouncing ball after a corner kick.
Its certainly a tough way to end the season when we didnt have our best day today, head coach Sarah McClellan said. But after giving up two early goals, I thought we showed a lot of effort and heart in the second half. I felt we competed well over the final 45 minutes but we just werent able to play that way in the first half. This team has done a good job all season with their work rate and belief in getting to the playoffs and Im proud of their determination.
After falling behind early, BU was hoping to duplicate its comeback over Maine from the exact same scenario less than three weeks ago. On October 13 in Orono, BU spotted the Black Bears two quick goals before roaring back for an improbable 3-2 win - a win that ultimately proved pivotal in securing a postseason berth. But this time around, the quick goals seemed to deflate the Bearcats, who struggled to generate consistent possession and scoring opportunities.
Maine wound up with an 11-10 edge in shots.
Junior keeper Gaby Gold recorded four saves.
The game marked the end of the collegiate careers for BUs seven seniors: Liz Cusato, Emma Kurth, Carrie Martin, Kaitlyn Martin, Conor OBrien, Stephanie Speirs and Sophie Sylla.
