BU Women's Soccer with dominant win over UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. - Binghamton womens soccer (8-6-2, 3-3-1 AE) scored a season-high four goals and strengthened its playoff position with a commanding 4-0 win at UMass Lowell (1-15-1, 1-5 AE) Thursday night from Cushing Field Complex. Senior forward Conor OBrien had a goal and an assist and four different Bearcats scored in the romp.

The Bearcats scored twice in each half and held a 17-5 advantage in shots. Six different players recorded points in the teams most lopsided win of the season.

I thought it was a well played game from start to finish, head coach Sarah McCelllan said. We got two goals in each half and earned the shutout ... so we were pleased with the team effort tonight. We knew we needed to find some rhythm in the attack and put a full game together and I thought we did a good job all over the field. It was good to get a decisive win on the road and now we need to get refocused and prepared for Sunday (vs. Vermont).

With the win, BU jumped ahead of both Vermont (2-3-2 AE) and New Hampshire (2-2-3 AE) in the America East standings, moving into fifth place with one game remaining. The top six teams advance to the America East tournament. Binghamton can guarantee a postseason bid with a tie in the teams regular-season finale Sunday afternoon against visiting Vermont and could still advance with a loss coupled with a New Hampshire tie or loss in their game at UMBC. Maine (16 pts.), Hartford (15), Stony Brook (15) and UMBC (15) have assured themselves of top-four positions. The Bearcats (10 pts), New Hampshire (9) and Vermont (8) are battling for the final two spots.

Needing a strong showing at Lowell, BU wasted little time, getting on the board just 2:29 into the contest when sophomore forward Katherine Corcoran took a feed from senior linemate Conor OBrien and beat the River Hawks keeper from just outside the box. It was Corcorans second goal of the season. The Bearcats doubled their margin in the 33rd minute when sophomore midfielder Rebecca Raber accepted a long feed from redshirt freshman Genevieve Crescenzo and chipped the ball over the Lowell keepers head to make it 2-0. It was Rabers third goal of the season.

In the second half, BU tacked on two more goals - the first on a nice solo effort from OBrien, who dribbled around several River Hawks defenders before beating the keeper for her first goal of the season. Freshman forward Leighann Bennett netted her first collegiate to complete the scoring in the 89th minute. Senior forward Sophie Sylla earned an assist on the play.

The Bearcats utilized three goalies in the split-shutout - the teams seventh of the season. Junior starter Gaby Gold went the first half and seniors Stephanie Speirs and Carrie Martin split second-half duties. Gold made her second start of the season and lowered her season goals against average to 0.77. None of the keepers was called on to make a save.

Binghamton hosts the Catamounts on Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The teams seven seniors will be honored before the game.
