Assistance for Domestic Violence Victims

Governor Cuomo urged New Yorkers to wear purple Wednesday to "shine the light" on domestic violence.

"Generally what we see nationally is one in four woman will be the victim of domestic violence over the course of their lifetime," said Meghan Whalen of the Crime Victims

The Democratic Women of Broome County honored Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a discussion on the resources available for victims in the area. 

Some of the victims are students at SUNY Broome.

"Parents and their children.  Boyfriend and girlfriend.  Husband and Wife.  It really doesn't have an age or a relationship," said Campus Public Safety Officer Marie Finelli.

Campus Public Safety Officer Marie Finelli says she see's cases of domestic violence almost on a daily basis.  She says the best advice she can give to victims is:

"Say something," said Finelli.

"Just make a phone call. Make an appointment.  We will do the best of the work to make it a safe place and as comfortable as a place as we can," said Melissa Martin, assistant counselor at SUNY Broome.

Counselors say one of the best things they can do for students is get them in contact with outside agencies like the Crime Victims Assistance Center and the SOS Shelter.

"We have advocates at the district attorney's office to help people go through the criminal process.  We have some domestic violence case management," said Whalen.

These agencies are available to all area residents.  Victims of domestic violence can also call 9-1-1, visit their local hospital or call the state's 24 hour hotline at 1-800-942-6906.
