B-Sens pick up first road win

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.  The Binghamton Senators took to the ice in Norfolk Scope Arena looking to recover from last nights 5-0 defeat.  With a great team effort, the B-Sens were able to do just that in a 4-1 win over the Admirals.

The first period was a huge improvement for the B-Sens in many ways, as they were able to hold the Admirals scoreless, as well as keep themselves out of the penalty box.  Darren Kramer, playing in his first contest this season, got the Sens going with a laser from the point at 7:59 of the opening period off a great feed from Matt Puempel.  Nathan Lawson stopped all five shots faced in the first period while the Admirals John Gibson turned away nine of ten.

The second period started quick for the B-Sens, as Andre Petersson took a feed from Mike Hoffman just in front of Norfolks John Gibson to put the Sens up 2-0 just eleven seconds into the second period.  The B-Sens played tough the remainder of the period before the Admirals Rickard Rakell netted an unassisted tally 13:02 into the second frame.  Both the Senators Nathan Lawson and Norfolks Gibson played solid the remainder of the period, eliminating the rest of the chances for either team.  The B-Sens went to the locker room with a 13-6 shot advantage in the period.

Norfolk came out of the locker room strong to start the final period, with over half of their team shots coming in the final frame.  However, Lawson consistently turned away great scoring chances for the Admirals to keep his team ahead.  Derek Grant added his second goal of the season 4:35 into the third off a great pass from David Dziurzynski, extending the B-Sens lead to 3-1.  Despite Norfolk managing 13 shots on goal during the period, Lawson and the B-Sens were able to stay composed, knocking away any close chances the host team served up.  Down a man with just under a minute to play, Jim OBrien was able to add an empty-net, shorthanded insurance goal for Binghamton, making the score 4-1 and well out of reach for the Admirals.

Nathan Lawson turned aside 23 of 24 shots faced to receive his second victory of the season.  Norfolks John Gibson finished with 26 saves on 29 shots.  The Senators went 0 for three on their power play opportunities, while Norfolk was blanked for both of their man advantages.

With the victory the B-Sens improve to 2-1-0-0, while the Admirals will move to 2-1-0-1.  Despite the win, the Senators will remain tied with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for second in the East Division with four points.  Norfolk holds the lead with five total points on the year, having played one more contest than the B-Sens.

The Binghamton Senators return to action next weekend when they face they Syracuse Crunch at War Memorial Arena in the first game of a home-and-home series, Friday night at 7:00 p.m.  The B-Sens will return home the following night looking to keep their success alive at home versus the Crunch in a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.  Sunday will pit the Senators versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, in Bridgeport for a 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon matchup.
