Crossing the Nation For Meals on Wheels
9/5/2013 (Updated 7:15:50 PM)59-year-old Phil Cihiwsky is traveling coast to coast on foot.
"I like to walk on average 20 miles per day," said Cihiwsky.
On October 4th, Cihiwksy will complete his 3,200 trip when he reaches York Harbor, Maine.
The goal of his seven month journey is to raise funds and awareness for Meals on Wheels.
"A program like Meals on Wheels crosses all boundaries. Everyone hopes someday they will grow old and as we grow older, the likelihood that we'll need the services of Meals on Wheels," said Cihiwsky.
With donations and help from volunteers, Broome County's program delivered over 275,000 meals to seniors last year.
"I'm very impressed that the Meals on Wheels program has touched his heart and helped him to go along the way and stop at different programs across the country," said Cihiwsky.
The Vestal native has traveled alongside highways and through cities, stopping at Meals on Wheels locations and encouraging others to get involved and delivering a meal or two himself.
"I hope it inspires people to recognize that everyday ten, if not hundreds of thousands of volunteers around this country are delivering meals for the many programs and that's a volunteer effort. I hope the are inspired to contact their local program and ask if they too can become a volunteer," said Cihiwsky.
