BU Housing Completion Celebration

With just a week before students return to Binghamton University, the school officially completed its new 1-million-square-foot housing project.

The four new residence halls include 3,000 new beds and is adding 900 beds to the school's housing stock. This at a time when BU is adding 2,000 new students from last fall to 2015.

According to the school, the project also created more than 6,000 new jobs over the last 10 years of construction.

"Dormitories of old aren't the kinds of places people want to stay in so you have to build it a little bit differently so they can find a place that's comfortable and attractive and that they can enjoy and call home for the nine months they're here," said Binghamton University president Harvey Stenger.

State Senator Tom Libous (R-52nd District) said:
"This created some 6,000 jobs in our region over the last ten years. That's pretty incredible. I'm not sure we've had too many projects throughout maybe a four-, five-county region that has created that many jobs."

The school's first move-in day for the upcoming year is a week from Thursday.
