Sanchez, Smith speak about Sanchez starting Friday

CORTLAND -- On Wednesday afternoon, Mark Sanchez discussed earning the starting nod for Friday's Jets preseason opener in Detriot.

While the incumbent is happy and believes he deserves the spot, rookie Geno Smith is not missing a beat. that said, he's unsure if he'll even earn a start later in the preseason. But for now, both QBs know that Friday is not the be-all, end-all.

Sanchez said, "I think I earned the right to start this first game and we'll see how it goes from there. I gotta keep playing well to stay on the field and that's my plan."

In terms of his role, Smith added, "To take care of my reps that come on Friday. I don't have any reaction towards it. The competition is still open so I'm just continuing to work and to grow."

Despite the history that Sanchez has with the Jets, Head Coach Rex Ryan is focusing on the present in terms of selecting a starter in the pocket for the 2013 campaign.

When asked about his incumbent quarterback, Ryan said, "There's been great moments, there's been bad moments. That's why I just assume we'll start right now. Somebody's gotta take the first snap and to me, it is gonna be a fair competition. A fair and open competition."

The Jets take on the Lions on Friday night.
