Binghamton University Studies Dyslexia

A trailblazing study at Binghamton University may reveal some of the mysteries surrounding a common learning disorder.

Neuroscientist Sarah Laszlo and her team are following kids grades kindergarten to fourth grade for five years to get a better understanding of Dyslexia in children's brains.

The kids come in get hooked up to a cap with electrodes and play different games all while their brainwaves are being monitored.

"It's real, it's a real disorder that a lot of people have.  And being able to treat it better can have a real impact on a lot of people," said Laszlo.
"It's going to help me learn more about how the brain works," said 9-year study participant Zac Smith.

"It's really neat to think that maybe some of the data that they gather can give some more insight to how children's brains work while they're learning to read," said Zac's mother Margaret Smith.

This is the second year of the study which a more than 400-thousand dollar grant funds from the National Science Foundation's Early Career Development Program.
