The Moratorium Lives on in the Village of Owego

A village board took steps Monday night to keep fracking out of Owego.
A special meeting was held in the Village of Owego to vote on extending the moratorium on fracking an additional six months. The moratorium was put into place a year ago and met little resistance at Monday night's meeting with six to one board members approving of the extension, as well as positive response from the public that attended.

However, one Village Trustee argues this vote wouldn't have been needed if the comprehensive plan, that was paid for by the board over a year ago, was put into place.

"Our planning board needed assistance in developing a comprehensive plan. We just went through a flood, we were inundated with the flood here in the Village. So we hired an outside company to give us a little hand with the comprehensive plan, but we paid them money, it's been a year. I haven't heard a thing about it and I'm a Village Trustee. If the plan was in place tonight, we wouldn't have ever had to vote on this issue," said Jenny Ceccherelli, a Village Trustee for Owego.

The moratorium will continue to ban fracking within the Village of Owego, which stretches roughly three square miles.
