Two streaks end as B-Mets drop opener to Bowie

BINGHAMTON, NY  The Binghamton Mets were held to five base hits offensively as they dropped the series opener, 6-3, to the Bowie Bay Sox Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium.

The loss ended Binghamtons six-game winning streak, and Josh Rodriguez went 0-for-2 as his 23-game hit streak came to an end. He was standing in the on-deck circle when Danny Muno flied out to end the game.

The Bay Sox struck right away against B-Met starter Cory Mazzoni. Kyle Hudson singled into right field to lead off the game, and former B-Met Niuman Romero followed with a home run over the right field wall to give Bowie a 2-0 lead in the first.

Mazzoni retired nine straight hitters after allowing the home run, but ran into trouble again in the fourth. With two outs and a runner on second base, Garabez Rosa hit a grounder up the middle that brought home Caleb Joseph. The throw to home plate from centerfield allowed Rosa to move to second base. The very next batter, Aaron Baker, roped another ball into centerfield; it dropped in for the second consecutive RBI single and put the Bay Sox up 4-0.

In the fifth, Josh Horton led off with a bloop double down the right field line. Hudson moved him to third base with a sacrifice bunt, and Romero singled to left field to plate the final run against Cory Mazzoni.

Meanwhile, Bowie starter Tyler Wilson had his way against the Binghamton offense. He faced one batter over the minimum through the first four innings, and did not allow a base hit until Xorge Carrillo singled with two outs in the fifth.

In the sixth, Danny Muno and Josh Rodriguez each worked great at-bats and were awarded back-to-back walks to start the inning. Two hitters later Allan Dykstra provided the offensive highlight of the night; the lefty blasted a three-run home run over the right field wall to put the B-Mets on the scoreboard.

The home run ended Wilsons night on the mound, and he turned the ball over to lefty Chris Petrini. Petrini gave up a single to Richard Lucas after coming into the ballgame, but forced Darrell Ceciliani into an inning-ending double play.

Scott Atchison was the first reliever out of the bullpen for Binghamton, and he tossed a scoreless seventh inning. Pedro Feliciano followed in the eighth with a scoreless inning in his 2013 B-Met debut.

In the ninth, Ryan Fraser ran into control problems on the mound for Binghamton. He walked three batters and gave up a sacrifice fly, as Bowie added an insurance run without tallying a base hit.

Alonzo Harris gave the B-Mets life in the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff single, but Marcel Prado finished the game without any further damage to seal the 6-3 win for Bowie.

Wilson (1-0) earned his first Double-A win of his career. The righty gave up two base hits in 5.1 innings, and allowed the Dykstra home run in the sixth. Mazzoni (2-2) allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings, and was tagged with the loss. Prados scoreless ninth inning earned him his second save of the season.

The B-Mets (40-26) will look to even the series against the Bay Sox (31-32) Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM as RHP Logan Verrett throws for Binghamton against LHP Jake Pettit for Bowie. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton was held to less than six hits for the first time since May 25 against PortlandDarrell Ceciliani went 0-for-4, which ended his 14-game hit streak
