New Diet Trend Draws from Ancient Times

ENDICOTT -- You've heard of the South Beach diet, the Atkins diet, and now, a new popular diet that's not so new. In fact, it's ancient.

In the last few months, more and more dieters have been taking a cue from cavemen.  It's called the Paleo diet.

"About a dozen, fifteen plus have been asking about it," said Adam O'Connor of Down to Earth Whole Foods.

"I didn't have any clients ask me about it until the last six months," said dietitian Helen Battisti.

No dairy, no grains, no processed foods, no salt, and no artificial sugar allowed.  The idea is that simple and fresh is better for you.

"It's coming from the gyms. So people really working out seem to be using the Paleo diet.  Eating a high protein diet versus a high carb diet sometimes just makes you feel more energetic," said Battisti.

One food store in Endicott is ordering specially made Paleo-friendly bread and treats.

"I think a lot more people like this stuff because of how naturally sweet and good it is," said O'Connor.

If you're on the Paleo diet, you can curb sweet craving with treats like grain-free granola bars, made with sunflower butter and seeds.

Dieticians say the Paleo diet is good because it consists of lots of fruits, vegetables, and fiber.

"It comes up pretty balanced.  If you plug in a few days of the diet and assess it against general recommended values for each nutrient, it's meeting most of it," said Battisti.

Battisti says without eating food groups like dairy, you need to make sure you take vitamin supplements like Vitamin D.

And ultimately, it is up to you if you feel good on the diet.
