Hundreds will hit the links in Apalachin Saturday to help honor the memory of firefighters lost in the line of duty.
The first annual Owego Fallen Firefighters Memorial Golf Tournament tees off Saturday morning at the Links at Hiawatha. 265 golfers on 65 teams will take part.
Part of the proceeds will go to a $2,000 scholarship for an Owego Free Academy senior who will pursue studying a career in first response. The rest will go to building a new training facility for the Owego Fire Department.
"It's kind of a culmination of honoring all those folks, paying tribute to them and carrying on their memories through the scholarship program and this facility," said Owego firefighter Patrick Gavin.
Gavin expects the event to raise between $10-15,000. The department is close to halfway to it's $1.2 million goal to complete the training center.
