Families Remember Loved Ones on Memorial Day
5/25/2013 (Updated 11:11:56 PM)VESTAL -- Every Memorial Day Weekend, Ken Fortier goes to the cemetary with his son Ryan.
"It's a great tradition we have in our family," said Ken.
With the help of local Boy Scouts, they planted hundreds of American flags all across Vestal Hills Memorial Park Saturday. It's their way of paying tribute to those who have served our country.
The flags aren't just for show, they are for visitors to place over the graves of loved ones.
"We know we're doing something that's helping the people and the community," said Ryan.
And the Fortiers have their own to honor.
Ken's father-- Ryan's grandfather-- served as a First Class Seaman in the Navy in the 1940's.
"My dad was the same age as my son when he went into the service. And it does make you realize how young these men and women are who are going over to protect us," said Ken.
And even though they never got to meet, Ryan says he feels a connection with his grandfather.
"I know what he did for our country and I'm very proud of him," said Ryan.
