School Budget Reaction
5/22/2013 (Updated 5/23/2013 12:21:22 PM)For the second year in a row every school budget plan in Broome County passed.
The only Southern Tier spending plan that didn't pass was Elmira Heights, which didn't get the required 60% of the vote it needed since it exceeded the State's tax cap.
A number of budgets called for tax hikes and staff cuts, and the head of Broome-Tioga BOCES feels the rising costs of health care and pension costs may mean more of the same in the future.
"Something still has to happen at the state level. I don't know what the number of staffing cuts would have to look like. But I don't think we're necessarily out of the woods completely. I think this is a fiscal environment we've been in for a while and will continue to be in," said Allen Buyck, Superintendent of Broome-Tioga BOCES.
Maine-Endwell's budget calls for almost 78 staff cuts, Binghamton's almost 55, and Vestal's 19.
