B-Mets shut out by Thunder, 5-0, in series opener

TRENTON, NJ - The Binghamton Mets were held to two hits and Cory Mazzoni was tagged for five runs in a 5-0 loss to the Trenton Thunder Monday night at Arm & Hammer Park. The B-Mets suffered their third shutout loss of the year and matched a season-low in hits.

Mazzoni made his first start in more than a month after missing 24 games due to right elbow neuritis. Trenton wasted little time to welcome him back. In the first inning they sent eight men to the plate, collected three hits and took advantage of an error to hang a crooked number.

After the Thunder started the frame with two hits, Tyler Austin supplied a sac fly. With a runner on third, J.R. Murphy sent a chopper back to the mound. Mazzoni fielded cleanly and threw to third, but Josh Rodriguez muffed the throw, allowing Jose Pirela to dive back safely. The misplay led to three unearned runs on Mazzoni's tab when Slade Heathcott chipped in with an RBI groundout and Reegie Corona laced a two-run single to centerfield.

Trenton added to their lead in the third. Murphy led off with a double, one of three extra-base hits allowed by Mazzoni in the game, and scored on a single up the middle by Heathcott.

Binghamton could not solve Trenton starter Matt Tracy (3-2). The southpaw baffled the B-Mets and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Darrell Ceciliani finally broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out single. The hit snapped a stretch of 12 straight B-Mets retired by Tracy.

He exited with one out in the seventh after collecting a season-high nine strikeouts. Aaron Dott retired the final two batters in the seventh and Branden Pinder struck out four over two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Mazzoni (0-1) exited after allowing a leadoff single in the fourth. He allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits in the losing effort. Shawn Teufel kept the Thunder off the board and chewed up three innings, while Adam Kolarek closed Binghamton's pitching tab with two scoreless frames.
