Students Honored For Saying "YES" to Safe Choices

Saying yes to safe choices.  Hundreds of middle and high schools students are doing just that and encouraging elementary school students to follow in their footsteps.

On Thursday, students from 13 school districts, called YES LEADers, were honored for the hours they volunteer speaking with young students about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and bullying.

YES was started by Senator Tom Libous in 1989 and the organization has a partnership with Lourdes Hospital.  He told students that when he was a student, his friend was killed in a drunk driving accident.  He said he wanted to help encourage others to make healthy choices.

"It's a program to teach self esteem, self respect, and respect for others and resistance.  Resistance against drug and alcohol temptation," said Senator Tom Libous.

"I want to stay drug, alcohol, and bully free and I want to show others that they can also be drug, alcohol and bully free and set a good example for them and be role models," said Ashley Woodruff a YES LEADer.

Ashley Woodruff was one of the three winners of the Jill Kavanagh Memorial Scholarships given out Thursday.  She was chosen by her peers because of her dedication to the program and a substance free lifestyle.
