Siena gets best of BU Baseball, 10-3

VESTAL, N.Y.Visiting Siena (20-24) jumped out of the gate with seven runs in the first two innings and went on to a 10-3 win over Binghamton (21-19) in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon from the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats outhit Siena 11-6 but the Saints used two home runs to pin a third-straight loss on BU.

Siena assembled three walks, a wild pitch and dropped infield pop-up to score four unearned runs in the first inning - with a bases-clearing double doing the primary damage. One inning later, Siena went to the long ball. After back-to-back singles up the middle, a three-run home run over the wall in left field stretched the Saints lead to 7-0.

Binghamton threatened throughout the game but couldnt mount a strong rally. The Bearcats loaded the bases in three different innings but left nine runners stranded in the first six frames and had two more erased on double plays. The hosts got on the board with two runs on three hits in the sixth inning but left the bases loaded. Siena got another run in the seventh and two more in the ninth courtesy of a two-run home run. Each team used six pitchers as they conserved arms for their respective stretch runs in conference play.

In BUs sixth, junior third baseman Brian Ruby got things going with a two-out walk. Senior first baseman Jordon Smucker followed with a single to center and running hard, Ruby took third with some aggressive running. Smucker moved to second on the throw. Sophomore catcher Nick Pancerella hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Ruby with BUs first run. Junior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz then hit an RBI single through the left side scoring Smucker. Sophomore right fielder Zach Blanden drew a walk to load the bases and freshman shortstop David Schanz hit a sharp liner that appeared headed for a run-scoring hit but the Siena right fielder made a diving catch to save two runs.

The Bearcats loaded the bases again in the eighth but produced just one run. Ruby led off with a single, Pancerella hit a one-out single and after a Bereszniewicz walk, Blanden plated Ruby with a sacrifice fly to center field. An infield pop-up left two more stuck on the bases. Binghamton had 12 left on base for the game.

Junior second baseman Daniel Nevares went 3-for-5 to pace the offense. Pancerella went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Smucker also went 2-for-4. Sophomore Greg Ostner and freshman Mike Bunal keyed a solid middle-inning pitching performance as four different hurlers allowed no earned runs over six middle innings. Ostner yielded just one hit in his two-inning stint and Bunal didnt allow a hit in his two innings.
