BU Wrestling Head Coach Dernlan Arrested
3/27/2013 (Updated 6:45:18 PM)BINGHAMTON -- Binghamton University Athletic Director Patrick Elliott has released information regarding the suspension of head wrestling coach Matthew Dernlan. Elliott says the two-week, unpaid suspension is the result of Dernlans arrest for disorderly conduct; public intoxication. Elliott says the arrest occurred after the Bearcats finished competing at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. No other staff or student athletes were involved.
Des Moines police arrested Dernlan late Friday, March 22. He was stopped by police while walking back to his hotel following dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant. Dernlan pleaded guilty to the charge and paid a $65 fine.
We hold our coaches and staff to a very high standard and we expect them to represent the University appropriately, said Elliott. I am very disappointed in Coach Dernlans actions.
Elliott says in addition to the two-week unpaid suspension by the University, Dernlan will also face additional departmental actions and will be held accountable, consistent with the expectations for Binghamton University athletics.
"I accept full responsibility for my actions and apologize to those I have let down, said Dernlan. This is not consistent with my character and I will work hard to grow and become a better leader and representative of Binghamton University."
Dernlan was hired last May to become Binghamton Universitys head wrestling coach.
