The latest trend in beauty, permanent cosmetics, could have a lasting impact on women going through illness or in need of a confidence boost.
Women are having permanent eyebrows, eyeliner, lash enhancement and lip liner tattooed. Until recently, women had to go travel out of the area to have the procedures done.
Bonnie Gardner Drumm, a certified permanent cosmetics technician said the procedure boosts self confidence, especially in women going through cancer treatment or other diseases affecting hair growth.
"I've had some alopecia clients, I've had cancer clients. Last week I had a lady with Graves' Disease," said Drumm. "These people do not have facial hair. So, they get up every morning and they spend 15-20 minutes putting on their eyebrows or putting on their eyeliner because they don't have eye lashes. So I'm actually servicing some medical needs here in the community as well as those people who want to wake up with make-up!"
Drumms said her clients with cancer will have the procedure done a month before or shortly after undergoing chemotherapy. For them, Drumm charges half the usual price. Procedures range from $400-$600.
Peggy Lindstrom of Binghamton's Southside wasn't pleased with the way her eye brows look, so she had Drumm permanently tattoo eyebrows on her.
"My girlfriend in New Jersey had it done and it's always been on my bucket-list," said Lindstrom.
With a little numbing cream, the process is virtually painless, despite a tug or pull here and there.
"I love them. I would recommend it to anyone," said Lindstrom.
Drumm is located at the White Rose Day Spay in Vestal and the Blue Orchid in Downtown Binghamton.
