Hockey and Heels: Local Ladies Learn Hockey from the Pros

BINGHAMTON -- The Binghamton Senators hosted their fourth annual Hockey and Heels event Tuesday night.

It's an off night for the team when they host local women at the Arena. They have the chance to ask coaches and players about the sport.

Kathy Elkins is a long time fan who has been to all four Hockey and Heels events. She said, "Every year you find something different about the players or the organization."

During an on-ice Q&A session, Elkins said she learned something new, "It's good to know what plays our players are actually doing with the offense and defense from the strong sides to weak sides so you follow the game closer."

The attendees asked questions ranging from how quickly can you do a lap around the ice to what is a forecheck to why don't you send players out to fight each other? They got that answer from Assistant Coach Steve Stirling.

"The simple answer is we don't have to tell them. If you've got someone that's a fighter for you, he's been doing that for a while."

Goalie Marc Cheverie added, "People are often intrigued by the violence, I guess."

After the event, the players were all smiles. Rightwinger Dustin Gazley offered, "We just have fun out there and take it for what it was so it was good."

Teammate Louie Caporusso enjoyed himself too, "Oh it's great. Sometimes you don't get to feel this way at the rink, just being able to relax with the guys, have fun and just mess around. It's a great time."

Beyond the fun, the players were also willing to take a night off to act as educators.

Cheverie said, "Any time you can help people understand the game and what you go through on a daily basis if they're interested we are more than happy to oblige."

The B-Sens had about 50 women sign up for this year's event.
