Funeral Draws Firefighters From Across the Nation

OWEGO -- Many firefighters at Captain Matthew Porcari's funeral service on Sunday did not know the fallen captain personally--but they described him as a brother.

"We're one big family in the fire service, doesn't matter if you're in Canada or the US," said Denis Charbonneau, LT. for the Ottawa Fire Service.

Firefighters came from as far away as Canada and Los Angeles to show their support for Porcari's family and the Owego Fire Service.

"We are firemen so we stand together," said Stephanie Alexander, member of the Newark Valley Fire Department.

Many spoke of the outpouring of love and support among those in the fire service.

"Our department went through this with one of our members and it's an impressive thing," said Bill Stouts, Vestal Fire Assistant Chief.

And Sunday's services provided a chance to learn more about Porcari's life.

"He seemed to be a person that puts everybody first and him last.  He really did a lot in the community," said Charbonneau.

And those that knew him agree. Stephanie Alexander is a member of the Newark Valley Fire Department.  She was on scene at the same fire where Porcari died.

"He was always happy, always smiling.  A great guy to be around.  So easy-going and so easy to get along with. Being a volunteer and dying in the line of duty makes him a hero," said Alexander.
