Entrepreneurs Get Set for Start-Up Weekend
11/8/2012 (Updated 6:56:40 PM)
(Source: Jason Weinstein)"If this fob and your cell phone become more than 150 feet apart then you can have it send you an alert or send you a text message," said McNeill, President of Spot Loss.
McNeill is one of 60 entrepreneurs set to take part in Binghamton's first Start-Up Weekend starting tomorrow at the Binghamton Riverwalk hotel. Another entrant - B-U's chapter of ENACTUS. BU business student Tara Schneider is president of the group which offers businesses hydroponic composting structures.
"It decreases the amount of waste and it increases the amount of savings companies will be able to have. And it also decreases their environmental impact," said Schneider.
Tomorrow's kickoff starts with dinner and networking. Then the pitches begin. The best 15 ideas move onto Saturday, when entrepreneurs get coaching and development help for their concept. Then on sunday a panel of judges pick the top three.
"One of my friends actually won in San Francisco for a technology app. I've seen a success with him. He has a new company," said Schneider.
"This community could use a start-up or two," said McNeill.
The top three businesses will get cash prizes, including $2,000 for the winner, and a package of legal and accounting help. Plus they'll be able to use the support from BCC's Entrepreneurial Assistance Program.
"We have our resources who are local community people in insurance, legal, financial, accounting," said Darlene Kanuk of the BCC Entrepreneurial Assistance Program.
There are still spots open for those with a business idea. Registration ranges from $65 to $90 but there are scholarships available. If interested, you should call the City of Binghamton's Economic Development Office at 772-7161.
