Thunder spoils B-Mets season finale

BINGHAMTON -- The Binghamton Mets could not hold any early three-run lead and fell to the Trenton Thunder by an 8-5 score in the season finale on Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.

Binghamton grabbed an early a against Trenton starter Nik Turley. The lefty, making his Double-A debut, allowed two runs on three hits in the first. With two on base, Allan Dykstra got Binghamton on board by bouncing an RBI double off the top of the right field wall and Eric Campbell capped the frame with a sac fly to right. The B-Mets added another run in the second on three singles.

Gonzalez Germen retired the first nine Thunder batters before hitting a speed bump in the fourth. Adonis Garcia led off with a single and Ramon Flores cut Binghamtons lead to one by squeaking a two-run homer over the left field wall.

Trenton struck again with three runs in the sixth to take the lead. The Thunder chased Germen from the game with a four-hit attack, highlighted by an  RBI single by Tyler Austin and two-run double by Kevin Mahoney. Armando Rodriguez struck out Rob Segedin to end the inning.

Edgar Ramirez posted a perfect seventh inning, but the Trenton Thunder tagged Brandon Moore for three runs in the eighth, stretching their lead to five.

Turley settled down after the first two rocky innings, ending his day with three scoreless innings. He struck out one and surrendered eight hits. Mikey OBrien took the reins and kept the B-Mets off the board in the sixth and seventh.

Binghamton finally got to OBrien in the eighth with doubles by Eric Campbell and Juan Centeno. Branden Pinder entered with two outs and induced a groundball by Pedro Zapata, but Addison Maruszak booted it at short, prolonging the inning.

Wilfredo Tovar cashed in by rolling an RBI single up the middle. Dustin Martin represented the tying run at the plate, but lined out to short to end the inning. Pinder returned for the ninth and posted a perfect inning to end the game.

Germen (8-12) allowed five runs on six hits in the loss. Turley (1-0) collected the win, surrendering three runs on eight hits over five innings.

The B-Mets (68-74) kick off their 22nd season on April 4, 2012 on the road against the Akron Aeros.
