Health Care for the Holidays - 12/16/2009
Local health care advocates are calling Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman the Grinch. He's the Independence Party Legislator who threatened to join Republicans who oppose the health care reform bill if Medicare expansion, a last minute compromise to the public option, is included. "We're very disturbed that one person, Joe Lieberman could single handily hold health care hostage for all Americans," said Mary Clark of Health Care for America Now.
The group Health Care for America Now accuses Lieberman of trying to stop the bill's passage because his state is home to several large insurance companies. They say what he's doing isn't fair to New Yorkers.
"People shouldn't have to make decisions whether or not they put food on the table or go to the doctor for treatable illnesses," said Binghamton City Councilwoman, Lea Webb.
The group is also calling for legislation that would make those insurance companies and others, including three in the Southern Tier, to spend more on health care costs. According to a study by Price-Waterhouse Coopers, only 81% of what you pay in a premium goes directly to health care costs. That's down from 95% 16 years ago.
"They'd have to spend 90 cents on every dollar for our actual health care. That would actually lower premiums. Overall that would save $54 billion," said Mary Clark of Health Care for America Now.
Still Health Care for America Now members admit that with the bill as it currently is, not every uninsured resident in Broome and Tioga counties would get coverage. Twenty percent, or about 3,000 people would remain uninsured.
"I think about 12,000 people who currently have no coverage would be able to obtain coverage," said Clark.
But the group says it will still continue to push for a public option and passage of the bill by Friday, or December 24th the latest.
Providing a last minute Christmas gift for its supporters.
