Hundreds Anticipated For Walk to Cure - 9/25/2009

Walking, running, roller-blading, hundreds of people across the nation will Walk to Cure Diabetes this weekend.

The local 5k Walk--at Highland Park in Endwell--helps raise money and awareness about diabetes.

This year they plan to raise more than 100-thousand dollars that will go towards research to find a cure. 

And Bailey Layish, a 9-year-old who has juvenile diabetes, says she's happy to see people learning about her disease and supporting the cause.

"It feels really great to know that people care and want to help.  That's just--that's just a really good feeling," said Bailey Layish.

Nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes.

And more than 174 billion dollars is spent on annual health care costs related to diabetes in the United States.

 Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast
GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion.
