B-Mets bats come alive for series sweep
4/9/2014 (Updated 4/10/2014 10:38:00 PM)BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets used a combination of ten hits, six walks and three Erie SeaWolves errors to earn a 7-2 win on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Matt Bowman tossed five strong innings in his Double-A and Wilfredo Tovar put together a three-RBI game to lead the B-Mets to their third straight victory.
The B-Mets cracked the scoreboard against Jeff Ferrell in the second. Cory Vaughn started the inning with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and came home when Tovar stroked a single to right.
The run came in support of Bowman who opened his Double-A debut with a bang, striking out the side in order in the first. He followed with a scoreless second and worked around a two-out single to post a shutout third. His only blemish came in the fourth when he surrendered an RBI single to Ramon Cabrera tying the game at one.
Binghamton used a two-out rally to break the tie in the fifth. Kevin Plawecki started the rally and chased Ferrell from the game by ripping a single to left. Matt Crouse got the call out of the bullpen to face Jayce Boyd. The B-Mets first baseman lofted Crouse’s second pitch into the right-field corner for a go-ahead RBI double. Darrell Ceciliani doubled the B-Mets lead by following Boyd with an run-scoring single.
The B-Mets tacked onto their lead without collecting a hit in the sixth. Matt Reynolds reached second on a throwing error by third baseman Francisco Martinez, took third on a fly out and came home on Kyle Johnson’s sac fly to center.
Binghamton put the game away with three runs in the seventh off Keith Faulk. Taijeron ripped an RBI double to left and Tovar blooped a two-run single inside the right-field line capping the B-Mets offense.
Bowman (1-0) went five innings and collected the win thanks to Binghamton’s run production in the fifth. He allowed one run on three hits while collecting four strikeouts. John Church posted two scoreless innings of relief, TJ Chism surrendered a run in the eighth and Jack Leathersich closed out the victory with a shutout ninth. Ferrell (0-1) allowed two runs over 4-2/3 innings in the loss.
The B-Mets (4-2) head out for their first road trip of the season and start a four-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Thursday night at 6:35 PM. LHP Darin Gorski makes his second start of the season against RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM.
POSTGAME NOTES: 22 of Binghamton’s last 25 runs have scored with two outs…Darrell Ceciliani and Travis Taijeron have each hit safely in their last four games…the win secures a series sweep for Binghamton, their first against the SeaWolves since they took four in a row in Erie in late August 2011
