Mourning of Slain JC Officer Continues

The mourning of the death of Johnson City Police Officer David Smith continues. Smith, an 18-and-a-half-year veteran of the force, was shot to death Monday morning as he was responding to a call of a disturbance in Southern Tier Imaging on Harrison Street.

Hundreds came out to a candlelight vigil last night to honor Smith. Smith was a 1988 graduate of Johnson City High School. Teachers there  remember him as a funny, caring student.

"In remembering David he was funny. I could always expect a good quip from class. He was fun loving, always made the class go quick and had fun," said Science Coordinator Charmain Foster.

Police say they still don't have a motive as to why 43-year-old James Clark, who was also killed in the incident, shot Smith. Police say Clark was on medication but that it was nothing that would cause him to act out of character like this. Police say that other than a DWI arrest 15 years ago, Clark had no criminal record.
