Small Business Disaster Training

You may have a disaster plan when it comes to you and your family, but how about your business?... 

With devastating floods in 2006 and 2011 teaching some hard lessons, business owners got a chance today to hear about what they need to know to prepare for the next disaster.

Included in the advice: Document everything immediately and thoroughly for insurance and FEMA purposes. This includes taking pictures of how high water reached in a damaged space in the event of a flood before cleaning up.
Also, know how to connect with your employees.

"What does the phone tree look like? Do you have everybody's cell phone and home phone and addresses? And what's the plan for everybody meeting? If you can't get to the business because the roads are blocked, where do we meet? How do we take care of our human needs first," said Debra Boudrieau of the Vermont Small Business Development Center.
 
Boudrieau says businesses that aren't immediate service providers can take some time after a disaster to reassess and look at your business model to see if you'd like to make any changes.
