NY STATE REGULATIONS FOR TAX PREPARERS
3/3/2014 (Updated 11:22:53 PM)With tax day approaching, Governor Cuomo announced new regulations Monday that makes New York one of four states to regulate the tax preparer industry.
New preparers must take a 16-hour basic course, others must take four hours of annual continuing education, and must pass a state competency examination.
Among the scams the state is warning against: preparers advertising a low price only to charge more; claiming a return was more complicated than expected; having a client deposit their refund into the preparer's account; and offering high-interest loans to clients prior to refunds being received.
