Ralph Townsend Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison

It's 20 years in prison for a Binghamton man shot by police as he stabbed his girlfriend with a knife.

Police say they shot 54-year-old Ralph Townsend twice in the back to stop him from attacking 39-year-old Eileen Montagano.

Montagano survived the attack, but died later of natural causes.

Townsend, who was convicted of attempted murder, received the sentence Wednesday in Broome County Court.

The incident happened in August of 2012 in Townsend's apartment at 6 Miles Street.

Townsend claimed that he wasn't trying to stab Montagano, but fell on top of her with the knife after being shot by police.
