Regional Economic Awards to be Announced

Millions of dollars in state economic development aid will be making its way to the Southern Tier but the question is how much and for which projects.

The state will announce its regional economic council awards next Wednesday.

Ten regions will vie for over $750 million. Last year the state awarded the Southern Tier over $90 million. This year the Southern Tier is pitching projects focused on tourism and agribusiness.

Other projects would also enhance Binghamton University's downtown incubator and create an incubator in Ithaca.

"We focused on how we can be a regional hub for innovation. We partnered with Cornell and Corning on what's known as the Innovation Hot Spot Program so I feel really good about our projects. But I also know that the other regions are very competitive and they've been working really hard just like we have," said BU President and Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council Co-Chair Harvey Stenger.

This is the third year of the regional council program. Stenger says 98 percent of Southern Tier projects from the first two are currently under contract.
